TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is aiming to eradicate extreme poverty by the end of his term in 2029. The head of state hopes to change the fate of Indonesia's lowest welfare group.
Prabowo expresses his goal while launching 166 people's school (sekolah rakyat) in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. "My goal for the end of the 2029 term is to change the fate of those living in extreme poverty, in the 1st and 2nd deciles," says Prabowo, as quoted from a live broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Monday, January 12, 2026.
The head of state is optimistic about this odd. According to Prabowo, his cabinet has already achieved various milestones just a little over a year after his inauguration in October 2024.
"We are not boasting, we are not bragging, but we must be proud of our achievements, we must be proud of the evidence," he says.
Prabowo warns against becoming a nation with low self-esteem, adding that Indonesia is a high-achieving country and will rise to become a developed and prosperous nation. "It's okay to be humble, but don't be self-deprecating, don't feel inferior. Indonesia can't be always seen in a negative light," he says.
He also mentions how the world is currently in turmoil and full of uncertainty and how grateful he is that Indonesia remains in good condition. "We have enormous potential and abundant wealth," adds Prabowo.
