TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto attended the 2025 BRICS High-Level Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, July 6.
The Indonesian head of state took part in a plenary session focusing on global peace, security, and artificial intelligence (AI), held at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Aterro do Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro.
The summit began with an official welcome ceremony for BRICS leaders and government officials at 09:30 AM local time, followed by a group photo session at 10:30 AM.
The first plenary session, titled Peace and Security and Global Governance Reform, opened shortly after. A closed-door working lunch continued the discussion on these key topics.
Later in the afternoon, at 02:45 PM, the heads of delegation from partner countries and international organizations arrived. This was followed by a second plenary session at 4:00 p.m., focusing on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic and Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence.
The day’s agenda concluded with an official reception hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and First Lady Janja Lula da Silva. The evening event was not open to the media.
The BRICS Summit will continue on Monday, July 7, at the same venue. The second day will feature a plenary session starting at 09:00 AM, focusing on Environment, COP30, and Global Health.
All main events of the summit, held under the theme Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance, were broadcast live through the BRICS Media Center and BRICS TV, except for the working lunch and other closed-door sessions.
President Prabowo arrived in Rio de Janeiro earlier to participate actively in the summit, following Indonesia’s official entry as a full BRICS member earlier this year.
He is accompanied by several key officials, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono, and Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir.
The delegation aims to position Indonesia as a bridge for dialogue in addressing pressing global challenges amid increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics.
According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia views BRICS as a strategic platform to promote more equitable and inclusive international cooperation and to further its national interests in areas such as the economy, finance, education, and technology.
