TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is confident that Indonesia can achieve energy self-sufficiency. To achieve this, Indonesia must reach a battery production capacity of 100 Gigawatt hours (GWh). Prabowo is optimistic that this target can be achieved within the next five to six years.
"From my calculation, it won't take long, six years at the latest, we can achieve energy self-sufficiency," he said while inaugurating the groundbreaking of the integrated EV battery industry ecosystem project in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
For the head of state, battery production is crucial because energy self-sufficiency will be achieved through electrical self-sufficiency. Especially electricity from solar power. "And electricity from solar power, well, the key is batteries," said Prabowo.
Therefore, Prabowo said, the EV battery project in Karawang is a historic project and has strategic value. This project is co-developed by PT Aneka Tambang (ANTAM), Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and the CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL) Consortium.
In addition to the project in Karawang, there are five integrated projects operating in North Maluku. "It can be said that this is an extraordinary breakthrough," said Prabowo. "This project may need to be multiplied."
The EV battery project development is funded with investments worth US$5.9 billion. The breakdown is as follows: US$1.2 billion for the battery ecosystem in Karawang and US$4.7 billion in East Halmahera, North Maluku.
The five sub-projects located in East Halmahera include nickel mining projects, pyrometallurgical smelter protection, hydrometallurgical smelter projects, battery fuel projects with nickel cobalt manganese cathode material products, and battery recycling projects that produce nickel cobalt manganese sulfate and lithium, as well as lithium carbonate.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said the project will produce 6.9 GWh in the first phase, or by the end of 2026. However, in total, its capacity will reach 15 GWh, equivalent to 250,000 to 300,000 electric vehicles.
"This can save around 300,000 kiloliters of fuel imports per year, with just 15 GWh," said Bahlil. "Our target, given the increasing market for solar power batteries, can reach 40 GWh here."
