TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said he has instructed schools across all levels in Indonesia to expand the teaching of French as part of efforts to strengthen educational cooperation with France.
Prabowo made the statement during bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Thursday local time.
“We want to improve it further in the field of education. I have instructed that French be taught at all levels of schools in Indonesia, in view of future global developments,” Prabowo said, as monitored online through the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel in Jakarta on Thursday.
According to Prabowo, the close bilateral relations between Indonesia and France cannot be separated from the direct support of President Macron. He also believes that in a global geopolitical situation marked by uncertainty, tension, and conflict, the two countries can play a positive role.
On the occasion, Prabowo also acknowledged the frequency of his visits to France. He is recorded as having visited France in January and April 2026. This means that his May visit marks the third time within a five-month period.
Speaking to President Macron, Prabowo first expressed appreciation for the warm and respectful reception given to him and the Indonesian delegation. “As is known, this year alone I have been to France three times,” Prabowo said.
He then noted that in 2025, Indonesia was invited to attend the Bastille Day Military Parade 2025 as guest of honor. According to Prabowo, Indonesia was the first Asian country to take part in the celebration.
“Last year, Indonesia was honored to be invited to participate in the défilé on July 14, the national day of the French Republic. I think this is a great honor,” Prabowo said.
