'Practical Magic 2' Ends 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Box Office Reign

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Practical Magic 2 topped the North American box office in its opening weekend, ending Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s six-week run at No. 1, according to industry estimates released Sunday, September 13.

The Warner Bros. sequel, which reunites Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens nearly three decades after the original film, earned an estimated US$30 million in the United States and Canada.

The film added about US$16 million from international markets, bringing its estimated global opening to US$46 million.

According to CNA, Practical Magic 2 continues the story of the Owens sisters, whose family is affected by a curse that causes the men they fall in love with to die young. The original Practical Magic, released in 1998, initially received weak reviews but later developed a cult following.

The sequel’s opening was enough to push Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day into second place.

However, Practical Magic 2 faces questions over whether its opening momentum will translate into sustained box-office performance. The film reportedly carries a production budget of about US$75 million, before marketing costs.

Industry watcher David A. Gross said the sequel’s audience reception could help its theatrical run despite weak critical reviews.

“Critics' reviews are weak like they were the first time, but the audience score is very good,” Gross said, noting that the cast could be a major factor in the film’s performance.

‘Spider-Man’ Drops to Second as Other Films Fill Top Five

The Tom Holland and Zendaya-led superhero film earned another US$8.4 million domestically, taking its global box office total to about US$2.45 billion after seven weeks in theaters, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Despite losing the top spot, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains one of the year’s biggest theatrical releases.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey ranked third, adding US$7.4 million in North America. The film has now spent nine weeks in theaters and has generated about US$1.64 billion globally, according to industry estimates.

Runner, an action thriller starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson, opened in fourth place with about US$6.4 million domestically. The Angel Studios film follows former soldiers racing to save a sick girl who needs a lifesaving organ transplant while a drug cartel pursues them.

Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five, earning another US$5.6 million in North America and bringing its domestic total to about US$47.7 million.
