TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia's government stated the need for time to clearly understand the type and amount of weapons that have been and will be sent from the United States to Ukraine. Spokesperson for President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, delivered the statement in response to one made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who mentioned that Washington would send additional weapons to Kyiv.
"Regarding what type of supply Ukraine continues to receive from the United States, it still takes time to clarify this definitively," Peskov said on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, as quoted from Al Arabiya English.
The day before, Trump stated that his administration would send more weapons to Ukraine, especially of a defensive nature, to help the country defend itself against Russian attacks.
During the press conference at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Monday night, Trump said the U.S. will send more weapons to Ukraine to defend themselves.
Supplies from Europe and US Policy
Peskov mentioned many conflicting statements regarding U.S. military aid to Ukraine. However, he acknowledged that weapon supplies from European countries are still ongoing.
"Obviously, supplies are continuing, that’s clear. Obviously, the Europeans are actively involved in pumping Ukraine full of weapons," said Peskov.
On the other hand, Peskov stated that Russia appreciates Trump's efforts to push for direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv and recognizes the potential for restoring the economic relationship between Russia and the U.S.
However, he regretted the existing sanctions imposed by Washington.
"But at the moment, the United States is implementing a number of restrictions. We believe that these sanctions are illegal, and they harm not only our entrepreneurs, but also the entrepreneurs of the United States," he said.
The United States Department of Defense also confirmed the step to send additional defensive weapons on direct instructions from President Trump.
"At President Trump's direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops," said their spokesperson, Sean Parnell, in a statement, as quoted from CBS News.
Trump Pushes for Peace Negotiations
Last week, Trump also expressed disappointment with the results of his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "I am very disappointed," said Trump, adding that there was no progress from the conversation.
In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described his conversation with Trump as a very important and fruitful one. Zelensky said that they had agreed to work together to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
