South Australia Reports 7 New Suspected H5N1 Bird Flu Cases

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Authorities in South Australia reported seven new suspected cases of the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain on Monday, July 27.

South Australian Primary Industries and Regional Development Minister Clare Scriven told reporters that the seven suspected cases were detected in great terns in the Limestone Coast region of the state's southeast.

Of those cases, Scriven noted that five were discovered in the same town within a two-day window.

Samples collected from the seven birds underwent initial testing by local officials before being forwarded to the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness for confirmatory analysis to establish whether local transmission has taken place.

If confirmed, Australia's total number of H5N1 cases will rise to 27 since the highly pathogenic strain was first detected on the mainland in mid-June.

Accompanying Scriven, South Australian Chief Veterinary Officer Skye Fruean stated that local authorities will step up surveillance in habitats frequented by high-risk seabird species known to harbor the deadly strain, including terns.

Meanwhile, Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins said earlier on Monday that no mass mortality events linked to the H5N1 virus have been recorded across the country, nor has any trace of the strain been detected in commercial poultry or agricultural operations.

Collins reassured that the risk to human health remains low.
