TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An astronomical phenomena adorns the night sky today, with the Strawberry Moon, the lowest full moon since 2006, making an appearance. The low position of the moon in the southern horizon is influenced by a rare phenomenon called major lunar standstill.
The Strawberry Moon got its name from the Algonquian Tribe tradition in North America, which associates it with the short-lived strawberry harvest season coinciding with the appearance of the June full moon.
This year, the full moon phase technically occurs on June 11 at 03:44 a.m. EDT (07:44 GMT) or 14:44 WIB (Western Indonesia Time). However, people in various parts of the world can start witnessing its beauty since the sunset of June 10.
In addition to its low position, this full moon will also appear larger during moonrise due to an optical illusion known as 'moon illusion.' The lunar disc may also take on a yellow to orange hue due to the influence of light scattering by the Earth's atmosphere.
The major lunar standstill phenomenon occurs every 18.6 years, when the moon's orbit inclination to the celestial equator reaches its maximum point. As a result, the moon will rise and set at more extreme positions than usual. Because it appears near the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the moon will take a very low path in the night sky.
According to a Space report, the combination of the seasonal position and lunar cycle makes this year's Strawberry Moon the lowest full moon in almost two decades. A similar phenomenon is expected to occur again in 2043.
