US to Send More Weapons to Ukraine, Trump Says

5 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, stated on Monday that the US would send more weapons to Ukraine to help the country defend itself from Russian attacks.

Speaking to reporters at the White House as reported by CNA, Trump said Ukraine is currently under heavy attack from Russia and needs to be able to defend itself. The US will send main defense weapons, he said.

On Friday, Trump told reporters that Ukraine would need Patriot missiles to defend itself, but did not mention it specifically again on Monday.

"We will send more weapons. We have to do it. They have to be able to defend themselves. They are under very strong attack right now. They are under very, very strong attack. We have to send more weapons, defense weapons, especially," he said at the beginning of the dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Following a phone call with Trump on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to work on enhancing Kyiv's ability to "defend the sky" as Russian attacks intensify. He said they discussed joint defense production, purchasing, and investment with Trump.

Ukraine has requested Washington to sell more missiles and Patriot systems, which it considers crucial in defending its cities from intensifying Russian air attacks.

Washington's decision to halt some arms shipments to Ukraine has prompted warnings from Kyiv that it would weaken their ability to defend against Russian air attacks and advancements on the battlefield.

Germany said it is in talks to purchase Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine to bridge the gap.
