TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – France celebrated Bastille Day on July 14 under unusual circumstances this year, with record heat, raging wildfires, and heightened geopolitical symbolism reshaping the country's biggest national holiday.

While the annual military parade in Paris went ahead as planned, authorities canceled fireworks displays and traditional firefighters' balls in several regions due to extreme weather conditions and wildfire risks.

Here is what to know about Bastille Day in 2026, according to France24 and Deutsche Welle:

What Is Bastille Day?

Bastille Day, known in France as La Fête Nationale or Le Quatorze Juillet (The Fourteenth of July), commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris on July 14, 1789.

The event became one of the defining moments of the French Revolution, symbolizing the uprising against absolute monarchy and eventually leading to the overthrow of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.

Today, Bastille Day is France's most important national holiday, marked by military ceremonies, public celebrations, village festivals, family gatherings, and fireworks displays across the country.

Why Is the Paris Military Parade So Important?

The centerpiece of Bastille Day celebrations is the military parade along the Champs-Élysées in Paris, passing beneath the iconic Arc de Triomphe.

The event serves not only as a display of military strength but also as an opportunity for French leaders to highlight national achievements and demonstrate unity.

This year's parade was particularly significant because it featured a record 6,800 troops, up from 5,810 last year, making it one of the largest Bastille Day military displays in recent history.

Why Was Ukraine at the Center of This Year's Celebration?

One of the most notable aspects of the 2026 parade was the strong show of support for Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended the event alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and around 30 other world leaders.

Ukrainian soldiers marched in the parade, while Ukrainian co-pilots trained in France participated in aerial displays aboard Mirage 2000 fighter jets.

The parade also featured around 500 troops from the so-called "coalition of the willing," a group of countries committed to supporting Ukraine's future security.

Aircraft from several European nations, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Denmark, also joined the flypast.

Macron described the participation of Ukraine and its allies as a symbol of Europe's "strategic reawakening" and international unity.

Why Were Fireworks and Traditional Celebrations Canceled?

This year's Bastille Day celebrations were overshadowed by France's third major heatwave of the summer and worsening wildfires.

Authorities issued red-alert warnings as extreme temperatures and dry conditions fueled fires in several regions, including the historic Fontainebleau forest south of Paris and parts of southern France.

The heightened fire risk forced local authorities, including those in Paris, to ban traditional fireworks displays and cancel firefighters' balls, long-standing celebrations typically held around Bastille Day.

Firefighters' balls are a beloved French tradition in which local fire stations open their doors to the public for community celebrations, music, and dancing.

How Severe Is France's Wildfire Situation?

The wildfires near Paris have become a major concern, with thousands of hectares already burned this year as France experiences one of its most severe fire seasons.

Officials have warned that 2026 could become a record year for wildfires, with the country already surpassing the total area burned in 2025.

The combination of prolonged heatwaves, drought, and strong winds has created highly combustible conditions across large parts of France.

As a result, Bastille Day 2026 has become not only a celebration of French history and national identity but also a reminder of the growing impact of extreme weather and climate-related disasters on Europe.
