TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has recruited several hackers to strengthen the Coretax system, the core tax administration system managed by the Directorate General of Taxes. The system, which is designed to facilitate taxpayers, has still been frequently complained about since its launch on January 1, 2025.
"We have invited hackers, Indonesian individuals, who are experts. Indonesians are extremely skilled hackers and are apparently feared worldwide. I have invited those who are ranked globally, the experts," said Purbaya to reporters at the Ministry of Finance on Friday, October 24, 2025.
According to Purbaya, this step is taken to detect and fix various weaknesses in the program and application code of Coretax. The recruited hackers from the Ministry of Finance found several vulnerabilities and errors in the Coretax system through their examination results. These vulnerabilities and errors should have been prevented from the beginning.
Purbaya continued, stating that the main issue with Coretax arose due to the weak quality control and quality assurance processes during the system's development. Purbaya suspected that the tendering process and collaboration with the previous technology provider were not followed by comprehensive testing before the launch. "The system should have been tested on a small scale before being fully deployed. But it seems that this was not done," he said.
Despite having an economics background, Purbaya claimed to understand the basic principles of system development, as he is also an engineer. He emphasized that the technical approach must be strengthened to ensure that Coretax is truly reliable and no longer burdens taxpayers. "We will now rectify everything within a month, even though the budget was allocated for four years," he said.
The Coretax or Core Tax Administration System was officially implemented on January 1, 2025. Coretax has become the latest information technology system developed by the Directorate General of Taxes to integrate all tax administration services in Indonesia.
