How Does Purbaya Respond to Destry's BI Governor Nomination?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has endorsed Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate to become Bank Indonesia (BI) governor, saying she has sufficient experience for the position.

Purbaya said he had previously worked with Destry and described their professional relationship and coordination as positive.

“She has sufficient experience, and I have worked quite closely with her. When I was chairman of the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), she served as an ex-officio representative from the central bank. So I think she is a good candidate. We have coordinated and worked well together, so there is no issue,” Purbaya said at the Finance Ministry in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Destry Named Sole BI Governor Candidate

President Prabowo Subianto has nominated Destry as the sole candidate to replace Perry Warjiyo, who resigned as BI governor. Destry currently serves as acting governor.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed Monday that the government had submitted Destry's nomination to the House of Representatives (DPR).

“The candidate is a single name, namely Destry Damayanti, who currently serves as acting governor,” Prasetyo said at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta.

The government also submitted two other presidential letters to the DPR, proposing candidates to replace BI's senior deputy governor and deputy governor, as well as candidates for the Financial Services Authority (OJK) board and ambassadors to several countries.

Prasetyo said the government had formally submitted the letters to DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad after coordinating with DPR Speaker Puan Maharani. The nominations will proceed according to parliamentary procedures and applicable laws.

Destry was appointed acting BI governor after Perry Warjiyo resigned. The decision was made during a BI Board of Governors meeting on July 26, 2026.

Her appointment as acting governor is based on the 1999 Bank Indonesia Law, as most recently amended by Law No. 4 of 2026 on the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector.
