TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Typhoon Chan-hom struck the Kanto region in eastern Japan, which includes the Tokyo area, on Tuesday evening local time, according to Antara, citing Kyodo News.

Local authorities issued warnings regarding potential flooding in low-lying areas and rising river flow levels.

Typhoon Chan-hom is moving in an unusual path from east to west, driven by a high-pressure system suspended north of the Japanese archipelago.

The typhoon is expected to reach western Japan and weaken into a tropical depression by Wednesday afternoon, August 12, 2026, local time.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), this is the first typhoon to make landfall in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, since records began in 1951.

The JMA said the influx of warm, moist air into the typhoon system has caused atmospheric instability. Heavy rain is expected to fall across areas from northeastern to western Japan through Wednesday.

The 15th typhoon of 2026 recorded a barometric pressure of 980 hectopascals at its center, with maximum wind speeds reaching 126 kilometers per hour as of Tuesday night.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecasts rainfall of up to 180 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region, 150 mm in the Tohoku region (northeastern Japan), 120 mm in the Tokai region (central Japan), and 80 mm in the Kinki region (western Japan) in the 24 hours through 6:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday.
