Jakarta Gears Up for Inaugural Car Free Night Trial

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government is set to trial a Car Free Night this Saturday, July 5, 2025. Preparations have been underway since July 3, including the installation of a giant videotron screen and a main stage at Hotel Indonesia Roundabout.

This Car Free Night event is part of the celebration series for Jakarta's 498th Anniversary and to welcome the Islamic New Year, Muharram 1447 Hijri. "Actually, it's a soft launch," said Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

What's Happening at Jakarta's Car Free Night?

As reported by Antara on July 2, 2025, the Car Free Night will kick off around 7 p.m. Jakarta time with a torch parade. The event will also feature religious sermons and performances by renowned musicians, including Opick and the band Gigi.

"Stages will be set up around the fountain. It will start on July 5 at 7 p.m. InshaAllah, there will be sermons, Opick, and then Gigi to enliven our celebration," Rano explained, adding that the torches used will be electric and eco-friendly, rather than traditional ones.

Rano clarified that this event will not be just a symbolic celebration but also an initial trial for future periodic Car Free Nights. The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to implement these regularly, partly due to the high number of Jakarta residents who exercise at night.

Furthermore, Rano revealed that Car Free Night is a strategic move to create a more environmentally friendly Jakarta. "This is also an effort to reduce carbon emissions," stated the former Acting Governor of Banten.
