Palestinian FM Says Embassy Move to Jerusalem Violates UN Charter

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin said that the relocation of several foreign embassies to Jerusalem violates United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and normalizes Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories.

Shahin said to RIA Novosti, citing ANTARA, the measures constitute a clear violation of international law and United Nations resolutions concerning the holy city, its legal and political status, and the just and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Several countries have moved or opened their embassies to Israel in Jerusalem in recent years. The most recent is Somaliland, an African territory with limited international recognition.

Additionally, Nauru, a small Pacific island nation, is expected to become the 10th country to open its embassy in Jerusalem, even though Palestine also claims East Jerusalem as its capital.

Shahin said the Palestinian authorities view the actions as an act of aggression against the Palestinian people and their rights, warning that they deal a serious blow to the prospects of achieving peace based on the two-state solution.

According to Shahin, moving foreign embassies to Jerusalem legitimizes Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory and its associated actions. The move also represents a "blatant disregard for numerous UN resolutions" at a time when Israel, he said, is committing extraordinary atrocities throughout the occupied territories.
