AFC Disappointed over Lack of Consultation on FIFA Plan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has expressed disappointment at being excluded from discussions surrounding FIFA's new proposal to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which involves selling World Cup shares to the private sector.

"The AFC notes with great concern and disappointment that it was not consulted by FIFA at any level prior to the public announcement of this proposal, and nor has it received any detailed governance, financial or legal analysis of the proposal and its potential repercussions, which is totally unacceptable," the governing body stated on its official website, as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Friday.

The AFC acknowledged that exploring innovative approaches to strengthen the future of global football remains essential. However, it stressed that an initiative of such scale and consequence must rest firmly on principles of good governance, transparency, and meaningful consultation.

According to the confederation, a decision that could reshape the commercial and financial future of the sport demands thorough engagement with confederations, member associations, and key stakeholders before reaching formal decision-making bodies.

The AFC firmly maintains that all stakeholders deserve sufficient information and time to thoroughly evaluate the proposal, including its governance, legal, commercial, and strategic ramifications.

This process is vital to ensuring that any outcomes reflect the collective interests of the global football community and bolster trust in FIFA's governance framework.

The AFC added that, as one of world football's six governing confederations, it remains committed to the sustainable development of the global game.

Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino asserted that the plan to set up a private subsidiary to sell World Cup shares is by no means mandatory. "FIFA Forward Enterprise, or FFE, is actually a proposal, an offer. It's part of a democratic process – a consultation process – and, above all, it is an opportunity but not an obligation," Infantino said.

He described the creation of a private subsidiary to manage commercial rights for FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, as a golden opportunity to accelerate football's growth worldwide. Nevertheless, Infantino reiterated that the proposal remains an offer rather than an obligation for FIFA's member associations.
