Volcanic ash rises from the crater of Mount Semeru, as seen from Supiturang Village, Lumajang, East Java, on April 20, 2026. According to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation report on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the volcano recorded 49 eruption earthquakes, one pyroclastic flow event, and 18 emission tremors. Residents are advised not to carry out activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13-kilometer radius from the crater. Antara/Irfan Sumanjaya

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Mount Semeru erupted dozens of times this morning, Thursday, September 10, 2026. The number was detected from earthquake records recorded by seismographs at the Mount Semeru observation post located on Mount Sawur, Lumajang, East Java.

The eruptions were not visible because Mount Semeru was shrouded in fog. The highest volcano on Java Island, 3,676 meters above sea level, was reportedly shrouded in cloudy weather with rain.

Yadi Yuliandi, who observed the volcano at the Mount Sawur post, detailed that visually, the fog prevented the smoke from the crater from being visible.

Based on seismic observations, 29 eruption earthquakes were recorded from early morning, with amplitudes of 10-22 mm and earthquake durations of 73-162 seconds. During the same period, 11 avalanche earthquakes and two gusts were also recorded.

Between 12 and 6 p.m. local time, another 29 eruption earthquakes were recorded by the observation post, with amplitudes and durations of 10-25 mm and 56-182 seconds.

The volcanic activity status at Mount Semeru remained at alert level III.

Isnugroho, Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lumajang Regency, said Semeru has been seeing rainy and cloudy weather the past few days. He warned of the potential for rain-induced lava flow to enter the river basins along the slopes and below. "But the rain hasn't been too heavy yet," he said.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) advised the public to avoid the southeastern sector along the Kobokan River, 13 kilometers from the summit. Beyond this distance, activities are discouraged within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Kobokan River and up to 17 kilometers from the summit. This is due to the risk of expanding pyroclastic flows and lava flows.

The public is also advised to refrain from activities within a five-kilometer radius of the Mount Semeru crater due to the risk of incandescent rocks.
