Lamine Yamal Makes History as Youngest Barcelona Captain at 19

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Teen phenom Lamine Yamal made history as he donned the captain's armband during Barcelona's 5-1 thriller against Feyenoord on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Camp Nou.

Yamal became Barca's youngest captain at just 19 years and 58 days old, when first-choice captain Raphinha was subbed in the 71st minute. He snatched the record from Bojan Krki, who captained Barcelona in a Copa del Rey match at 20 years and 56 days old back in 2010, as reported by Sports Illustrated.

But the captaincy was only one part of the Spanish forward's impressive performance in the recent Champions League fixture. Yahoo! Sports noted that Yamal assisted Raphinha and Gabriel Jesus before scoring his own goal in the 77th minute with a direct free-kick.

Yamal's addition to the five-man captaincy structure in Barcelona followed the departure of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo, which left Barca needing a reshuffle for the 2026/27 season.

Head coach Hansi Flick handed the permanent captaincy to Raphinha, who serves alongside primary vice-captain Pedri. 

To decide the remaining three captains, Flick allowed his squad to vote among the players, with Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong and Lamine Yamal emerging as the choices.

Lamine Yamal and "Youngest-Ever" Records

The captaincy added to Yamal's long list of "youngest-ever" records, beginning with his debut in Barcelona at 15 years old. 

In the 2023/2024 La Liga season, he became the youngest player to start a La Liga game at 16 years and 38 days old, surpassing a 2012 record by Fabrice Olinga with Malaga. He also broke the record for the youngest player to provide an assist in La Liga just a few days later, and the youngest La Liga goalscorer in October 2023. 

After helping Spain to enter the Euro final in 2024, he became the youngest player to win a major international trophy. 

Lamine Yamal also saw his third nomination for the Ballon d'Or "Young Talent of the Year" after a successful year with Spain in the 2026 World Cup.
