Indonesia Still Has 11,000 Villages Without Electricity, Minister Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Energy and Mineral Resources Minister (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia said around 11,000 villages in Indonesia still lack access to electricity, as the government works to expand power infrastructure across the country.

“We know that out of the total number of villages without electricity, there are approximately 11,000,” Bahlil said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 28, 2026.

The minister said the government has so far completed electrification projects in around 1,400 villages through the 2025 Village Electricity Program. President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to inaugurate the program on August 14, 2026.

According to Bahlil, the Village Electricity Program is part of the government's efforts to accelerate equal access to electricity, particularly in remote areas that have yet to receive reliable power services.

He said the villages set to be inaugurated by Prabowo are part of the completed 2025 program. “The work is finished. So we are no longer discussing the budget because it is ready for inauguration,” Bahlil said.

The government has also prepared funding for the Village Electricity Program for 2026 and 2027. Bahlil said the focus now is on ensuring the program's implementation proceeds according to plan.

Bahlil added that President Prabowo has set a target to provide electricity access to all villages and hamlets across Indonesia by 2029, the final year of his presidential term.

Previously, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources allocated Rp4.35 trillion in the 2025 budget for village electrification programs and free electricity connections for low-income households through an assignment to state-owned electricity company PLN.

The program is aimed at improving electricity access in underserved communities and supporting the government’s broader efforts to achieve energy equality across Indonesia.
