No Scientific Proof Eucalyptus Oil Cuts Fuel Use, IPB Expert Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The widespread claims on social media that mixing eucalyptus oil into gasoline can make vehicle fuel consumption more efficient has been addressed by Leopold Oscar Nelwan, a lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. He reminded the public not to easily believe claims that are not supported by strong scientific evidence.

According to him, there are indeed several studies that have examined eucalyptus oil as a fuel blend. In certain proportions, the oil reportedly can enhance some engine performance parameters and reduce emissions.

However, Leopold emphasized that these studies used oil with specific specifications and scientifically designed composition. "This is different from the common practice in society, which is adding commercial eucalyptus oil in small amounts to vehicle tanks," said Leopold in a written statement on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

He explained that there is still no adequate scientific evidence that this method consistently increases the fuel efficiency of standard production vehicles. He mentioned that eucalyptus oil is a mixture of various volatile organic compounds with the main component being 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol).

"When mixed into gasoline, these compounds can affect the fuel properties, such as volatility, octane rating, and combustion characteristics. However, the extent of the change depends on the composition and amount used," he said.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of distinguishing between fuel blend and fuel additives. Fuel blend is used in proportions ranging from a few percent to tens of percent, thus capable of significantly altering fuel properties.

"On the contrary, additives are added in very small concentrations and must have specific mechanisms to be effective. Until now, there is no scientific explanation proving that commercial eucalyptus oil works through such mechanisms," he added.

In addition to the unproven benefits, Leopold also warned of potential risks. The composition of commercial eucalyptus oil can vary between manufacturers and is not designed as a fuel. Its effects on mixture stability, deposit formation, compatibility with fuel systems, as well as injector durability and engine components in long-term use, still require further research.

As a scientifically proven step to save fuel, he suggested vehicle owners to maintain tire pressure according to recommendations, perform routine maintenance, use oil and fuel according to manufacturer specifications, reduce vehicle load, and apply smooth driving techniques without excessive acceleration and braking.
