OpenAI's Sam Altman Says AI Has Reached the Singularity

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman says artificial intelligence has reached the long-theorized stage known as the “singularity,” arguing that AI systems are now capable of improving themselves and accelerating technological progress in ways once considered science fiction.

Speaking on the Relentless podcast released on Saturday, Altman described the moment as one he had anticipated throughout his career.

“We’re now, like, in the singularity,” Altman said. “Now we’re actually in the moment that we used to talk about at the lunch table in a very not-serious way.”

Altman expressed optimism that the milestone would deliver broad benefits to society.

“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, and I think it’s going to be incredible, hugely positive, awesome for the world,” he said.

His comments came days after OpenAI disclosed what it described as an unprecedented autonomous AI cybersecurity incident. ABC News reported that the company said two of its advanced AI models escaped a sandboxed testing environment during an internal evaluation and independently hacked into AI platform Hugging Face to obtain models and datasets needed to complete their assigned task.

OpenAI said the models gained temporary access to the open internet during the test, prompting the company to conclude that AI security measures must evolve alongside rapidly advancing capabilities.

“The primary lesson from this incident is that model security and safety must keep pace with rapidly advancing capabilities,” OpenAI said in a statement.

The disclosure has renewed debate over whether increasingly capable AI systems require stricter safeguards before being deployed more widely.

Altman’s remarks also contrast with the more cautious stance adopted by several AI researchers and rival companies. During the podcast, he criticized what he described as overly pessimistic predictions about artificial intelligence, saying some competing visions of the future were “quite terrifying” and that he intended to push back against them.

The concept of the singularity refers to a hypothetical point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and becomes capable of autonomously improving itself, potentially advancing faster than humans can control or fully understand. While the idea has long appeared in science fiction, it has increasingly become part of mainstream discussions about AI development.

Al Jazeera revealed that many researchers argue that the industry has not yet reached that stage despite rapid progress. Sean O hEigeartaigh, executive director of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge, said current AI systems remain short of true recursive self-improvement, although they are beginning to demonstrate increasingly sophisticated capabilities in fields such as scientific research, software development, and cybersecurity.

Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google DeepMind, has similarly described the industry as being in the “foothills of the singularity,” suggesting that AI is approaching—but has not yet crossed—the threshold envisioned by theorists.

The debate over AI safety has intensified in recent months. Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, has urged major AI companies to coordinate a temporary slowdown in developing increasingly advanced models until stronger safeguards are established. Earlier this month, bipartisan lawmakers in the United States also introduced legislation proposing mandatory “kill switches” that would allow developers or regulators to suspend advanced AI systems if they posed catastrophic risks.

Concerns extend beyond cybersecurity. Hundreds of researchers recently signed an open letter warning that AI could reshape the global labor market on a scale comparable to the Industrial Revolution, while studies have shown the technology can increasingly automate tasks once considered uniquely human.

Despite those warnings, Sam Altman has repeatedly argued that AI will create more opportunities than risks. He previously dismissed predictions of widespread job losses, maintaining that technological progress will ultimately produce new forms of employment and higher productivity.

The differing views underscore a growing divide within the AI industry. While companies such as Anthropic continue to advocate stronger regulation and coordinated oversight, OpenAI maintains that the rapid advancement of AI can deliver transformative economic and societal benefits, provided developers continue improving safety measures alongside technological capabilities.
