Prabowo Raises Concerns Over Foreign Ships Dominating Logistics

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has expressed concern about the dominance of foreign-owned ships in Indonesia's logistics and cargo delivery industry. Prabowo discussed this issue with the Head of the Danantara Investment Management Agency, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani.

According to Rosan, Prabowo wants to transform the current foreign dominance, aiming for Indonesia to develop its own fleet. "What President sees now is that 95 percent of the cargo shipments are carried out by foreign-flagged vessels," Rosan said after meeting Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Prabowo emphasized his preference for ships delivering goods to Indonesia to be Indonesian-flagged. "How can we ensure that in the future, these ships will hoist the Indonesian flag? He also asked for the developmental plan," Rosan expressed.

The Minister of Investment and Industrial Estate noted that Indonesia already has shipyards, both private and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). However, he mentioned that the government will strive to enhance the domestic ship production capability.

He stated the intention to bring ship construction in domestic shipyards up to global standards. "We want to move forward with this, so that the construction of these ships can be carried out in Indonesia, while also meeting good standards, international standards," he stated.

During the same discussion, Prabowo requested that the Minister of Research and Technology, Bambang Brodjonegoro, assist in developing technology and research to meet the needs of the national shipbuilding industry.

Prabowo urged universities to collaborate with the state-owned shipyard, PT PAL Indonesia, to strengthen the capacity of the domestic shipbuilding industry.

"By working together with PT PAL, research and studies, professors related to the shipbuilding industry, would boost our ship industry, thus providing job opportunities and meeting our needs within the domestic industry," Brian stated.

According to him, the need for ships in Indonesia covers various sectors, from passenger ships to logistics. Therefore, he emphasized that significant demand is key to driving the growth of the national shipbuilding industry.
