TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TEMPO has appointed Bagja Hidayat as its new editor-in-chief, replacing Setri Yasa. Previously serving as the company's deputy editor-in-chief, the handover ceremony between Bagja and Setri took place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, after Tempo's weekly opinion meeting at the office on Jalan Palmerah Barat, South Jakarta.
During the ceremony, Bagja and Setri were given black t-shirts with the words "Londo Ireng" (Black Dutch) and "Antek Asing" (Foreign Stooge), two terms often uttered by President Prabowo Subianto.
For Bagja, assuming the role of editor-in-chief at TEMPO amidst current circumstances is no easy feat. Therefore, Bagja said, the press needs to return to its primary function; social control and monitoring power. "Tempo will not stray from that function," Bagja said.
Bagja is an alumnus of IPB University. He began his career at TEMPO in 2001. Throughout his career as a journalist, he has received various awards for investigative reporting, including the Jakarta Journalist Award and the Mochtar Lubis Award.
In 2014, Bagja published a book titled "#kelaSelasa: Jurnalisme, Media, dan Teknik Menulis Berita" (#kelaSelasa: Journalism, Media, and News Writing Techniques). The book contains a collection of notes and tweets from the internal evaluation program of Tempo magazine about the world of journalism, media, and news writing techniques.
During his time as a Tempo journalist, Bagja admits to having many memorable experience, including an investigative report on the death of a seasoned archeologist in Indonesia, Lambang Babar Purnomo. He was allegedly murdered for exposing ancient artifacts' theft and black market syndicates. The Tempo magazine report, titled "Lambang dalam Pusaran Mafia Purbakala" (Symbols in the Swirl of the Ancient Artifacts Mafia) was published in September 2008.
Setri Yasa, who has joined the company's board of directors, during the ceremony, said that the leadership shift is part of Tempo's regeneration process. As an alumnus of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Riau, he believes that Tempo will remain independent despite internal changes.
"I believe that my successor, Bagja Hidayat, along with the team, will lead Tempo to further progress," said Setri.
