TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to formally recognize Israel and the United States (U.S.) as the initiators of aggression against Iran.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UNSC President Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Araghchi pressed the council to uphold its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security, as reported by Iran's Tasnim news agency, cited by Anadolu.
Araghchi specifically accused Israel of deliberately targeting residential buildings, civilians, and civilian infrastructure, describing the actions as a "clear violation" of the UN Charter and international law.
"The Security Council should also hold the aggressors accountable and prevent the recurrence of such heinous and serious crimes to enable it to maintain international peace and security," the letter stated.
"It should be noted that political and military leaders who order an act of aggression are also individually liable for the international crime of aggression under customary international law."
Araghchi further stated that Israel and the U.S. also targeted Iran's nuclear facilities, which are protected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He characterized this as "a gross violation of the UN Charter, the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and IAEA instruments and resolutions."
He emphasized that the UNSC should demand accountability from the "aggressors" and prevent the recurrence of such heinous and serious crimes to enable it to maintain international peace and security
On June 13, Israel launched a major airstrike on several locations in Iran, including civilian apartments, nuclear sites, and military facilities. This attack resulted in the deaths of several senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and numerous civilians. The Iranian Health Ministry reported at least 606 fatalities and 5,332 injuries.
Tehran retaliated with missile and drone strikes against Israel, which, according to figures released by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, killed at least 29 people and injured over 3,400.
On June 22, U.S. forces bombed three nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan, escalating the conflict. In response, Iran attacked the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
After 12 days of mutual attacks, a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was reached on June 24, mediated by the U.S.
