TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to holding presidential and parliamentary elections within one year of the conclusion of the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
Speaking at a high-level international conference on Palestine in New York, which was held at the United Nations General Assembly, as reported by Anadolu, Abbas asserted that the Palestinian people want "a state based on pluralism and the peaceful transfer of power."
The Palestinian leader also called upon all countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to do so.
Abbas delivered his remarks remotely after the U.S. Department of State revoked the visas of more than 80 Palestinian officials, preventing them from attending the UN event in person.
The conference witnessed a significant diplomatic breakthrough on Monday morning when French President Emmanuel Macron declared, "I declare that today, France recognizes the state of Palestine."
This announcement was followed by similar declarations from Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco on the same day. These recognitions came just a day after the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Portugal had officially announced their own recognition of the Palestinian state.
The conference, formally titled the "High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Issue and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution," was co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. It brought together global leaders who urged immediate action to end the genocide in Gaza and to advance a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
With over 80% of the international community now having recognized Palestine, diplomatic pressure on Israel is mounting as the conflict in Gaza persists. The ongoing Israeli military campaign has resulted in the deaths of over 65,300 Palestinian civilians, leaving the enclave in ruins.
