VP Gibran Apologizes to Kalimantan Residents as Haze Persists

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka apologized to residents across Kalimantan as air quality has yet to fully recover amid ongoing forest and land fires.

Gibran made the apology while inspecting a forest and land fire response post in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

“I sincerely apologize to the people of Kalimantan because air conditions have not yet fully recovered,” Gibran said, according to a government press release.

Gibran said the government was continuing efforts to tackle the fires in line with President Prabowo's directives.

“We will maximize our efforts and do our best in accordance with the President's directives,” he said.

Gibran Inspects Fire Response in Three Provinces

Gibran inspected forest and land fire response efforts in three provinces on Thursday, visiting Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan, Banjarbaru in South Kalimantan, and Kubu Raya in West Kalimantan.

During the visits, he reviewed the latest developments in firefighting efforts and assessed needs on the ground.

He said fire management must be carried out comprehensively, with effective firefighting accompanied by measures to protect public health and safety as well as wildlife and their habitats.

Gibran also stressed the need to protect vulnerable groups, including children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.

He called on authorities to ensure that affected residents continue to have access to essential services, including healthcare and education, as well as adequate logistical support while the fires continue.

Gibran Calls for Stronger Coordination

Gibran urged central and local governments to strengthen coordination and ensure that problems identified in the field receive clear and measurable follow-up.

He also called on all parties to remain vigilant, noting that El Niño conditions are expected to persist until early 2027.

“Conduct more intensive preventive patrols. Strengthen coordination and involve all elements of society. Ensure that every problem in the field is addressed quickly and measurably. Also increase public outreach and education,” Gibran said.
