TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cristiano Ronaldo moved closer to one of football’s most remarkable milestones after scoring his 979th career goal as Al Nassr defeated Abha 2-1 at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh on Wednesday.
In the 22nd minute, the 41-year-old Portuguese forward opened the scoring, heading home Angelo’s inswinging corner, as reported by The Daily Star. The ball struck the post before crossing the line, but Ronaldo was credited with the goal.
With this strike, Ronaldo’s official career tally now stands at 979 goals in 1,334 matches. He is just 21 goals away from reaching the unprecedented 1,000-goal mark. He is now close to becoming the first player to reach 1,000 competitive senior goals.
Since joining Al Nassr, Ronaldo’s latest goal was his third in the Saudi Pro League this season and his 132nd for the club. The former star of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus has continued to add to his scoring records well into his 40s.
The milestone race also remains linked to his long-running rivalry with Lionel Messi. La Pulga has scored 927 official career goals in 1,171 appearances, leaving him 52 behind Ronaldo as both players approach the latter stages of their careers.
Ronaldo’s goal also helped Al Nassr bounce back from their 2-1 defeat by Al-Ittihad last weekend. The victory kept them among the early Saudi Pro League leaders on 15 points, level with Al Hilal and Al Qadisiya, while Abha remained at the bottom with one point.
