TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tremor from an earthquake near Bekasi was felt across Jakarta and its surrounding areas on Wednesday night, August 20, 2025. News of the event spread quickly on social media platforms and in chat groups, with testimonies describing the shaking as quite strong but brief.
Initial reports from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the earthquake's occurrence. The agency stated that a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck precisely at 7:54 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The epicenter was located on land, just 14 kilometers southeast of Bekasi Regency in West Java.
The earthquake's hypocenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers. The BMKG has not yet provided an explanation for the cause. However, the tremor was reported to be strongest in Bekasi and Purwakarta, registering at a scale III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. This intensity is equivalent to vibrations felt indoors as if a heavy truck were passing by.
Meanwhile, the shaking was felt at a scale II-III MMI in other areas, including Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and South Tangerang. The tremor was also felt as far away as Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, at a scale II MMI. This intensity is described as being noticeable to a few people indoors and can cause light, hanging objects to sway.
According to BMKG data, the earthquake originating from Bekasi was the fourth tremor felt throughout the day. Previous earthquakes had occurred in areas such as West Bandung, triggered by activity from the Lembang Fault. The agency reported that this particular fault has shown heightened activity recently.
